Alex Van Halen doesn’t hold back on Sammy Hagar

The verbal sparring between Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen has resumed, as per UCR. In a recent interview with the Brazilian magazine Roadie Crew, Alex was questioned on the autobiographies of Hagar and David Lee Roth, the two iconic frontmen of Van Halen.

“Quite entertaining,” according to Alex, Roth’s book Crazy From the Heart “faithfully reflects [Roth’s] sense of humour.”

While the text is somewhat abstract and occasionally loses the thread, it remains a very interesting perspective on that era.

Alex has significantly less polite opinions about Hagar and his 2011 book “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock”.

For a number of years, Alex and Hagar have been involved in arguments. The Red Rocker called it “blasphemy” that his years with Van Halen were disregarded when the drummer’s autobiography, “Brothers”, was published in 2024. At about the same time, Alex claimed that Hagar’s Van Halen-focused Best of All World tour wasn’t “doing the band justice.”

In an attempt to mend past hurts, Hagar allegedly asked Alex to accompany her on that journey. But the Red Rocker voiced his disgust once more when he received no reaction.

Al, you’re fine. Just leave me alone. I’ll leave you alone. Everything’s good, I’m making you money, by the way, Al. I’m out there selling Van Halen records and keeping the name alive, keeping the music alive.

Hagar implied in the same interview that Alex was “angry” because “he seems like he doesn’t want to play drums or can’t play drums anymore.”

Hagar’s book, which described some of Eddie Van Halen’s darker side, including the guitarist’s unpredictable behaviour and struggles with alcoholism, is said to be the source of the conflict between Hagar and Alex. Although Hagar has now apologised for what he revealed in Red, it is said that Alex has not pardoned him.
