A step forward in the right direction – review of “Defying Gravity” by Dyecrest

If you’re a new reader of Chaoszine, you have to know that I’m slightly obsessed with Finnish bands. If you’re already accustomed with my writing, you already knew that. Which is why today I’m taking you with me to review “Defying Gravity”, Dyecrest‘s upcoming album to be released on April 24th.

The Finns deliver their most mature, focused, and emotionally resonant work to date. It’s an album that doesn’t just refine their sound, it elevates it. Where past releases hinted at the band’s potential, “Defying Gravity” feels like the moment everything locks into place: the songwriting, the atmosphere, the heaviness, and the emotional clarity.

From the first track onward, I’m happy to say that “Defying Gravity” represents a genuine step forward from the band’sprevious work. The production, mixing, and mastering are crisp and powerful, giving the record a polished yet dynamic edge. The album’s sound is unmistakably Dyecrest: melodic metal with heart, grit, and a sense of uplift.

While the album is consistently strong, two tracks rise above the rest. “The Weight of the Trigger” is probably the most emotional song on the record. The song has both intensity and vulnerability, and it hit me right away. Then comes “Enceladus,” which shows how well the band can build and release tension. This is Dyecrest at their most movie-like!

In conclusion, “Defying Gravity” is Dyecrest’s most confident and fully realized release to date. It’s a melodic metal album with deep emotions, great songwriting, and amazing production. It shows that the band has improved in both vision and execution, which is a clear step up from their last work. This band isn’t basic anymore; they’re getting better.
