Mastodon release a statement about the lawsuit brought on by Brent Hinds’s estate

Regarding the lawsuit that Brent Hinds’ estate brought against them earlier this month, Mastodon released a statement, as per theprp. According to that lawsuit, the band has not yet adequately resolved the issue of separating Hinds from the numerous Mastodon-related businesses. After the band expelled Hinds in early 2025, that procedure was reportedly still ongoing, and by the time of Hinds’ death in a motorbike accident in August of the same year, no settlement had been found. After Hinds’ death, the estate claims that the band offered them a $80,000 buyout, but they contend that the band failed to give a thorough explanation of how they arrived at that amount. The estate has rejected that offer as a result and is requesting a complete accounting.

Additionally, since Hinds’s death, the band has been accused by the estate of utilising Hinds’ image and likeness in promotional materials and on the album art for “Marrow Deep.” The estate also objected to the public disclosure of personal information about Hinds’ life through their documentary, “The Mastodon in the Room.”

Sadly, a private business dispute with the estate of our dear departed friend Brent Hinds was made public. We strongly deny allegations of ill intent on our part and intend to vigorously defend what we believe is a meritless lawsuit. We don’t intend to speak publicly on this going forward, as we feel this wouldn’t honor Brent’s memory or the legacy of his musical gifts.
