The estate of Brent Hinds has started a lawsuit against Mastodon

Author Benedetta Baldin - 11.9.2026

According to reports, Mastodon is being sued by the late Brent Hinds’ estate, as per theprp. After being kicked off the band’s lineup in early 2025, Hinds became enraged and made several nasty remarks about his former colleagues on social media. According to an article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Hinds’ estate has just sued the band, alleging that they profited off his image after his passing. Additionally, the estate argued that even after Hinds was fired, he still had a stake in the band and associated economic endeavours. The issue of divesting Hinds’ investments was not entirely settled before his death, despite reports that talks were in progress before to his demise.

This lawsuit, which was filed on September 3rd, contends that Hinds’ estate should receive fair recompense for his participation in the associated business endeavours as well as for the band’s use of his likeness in album artwork and promotional materials following his death. According to the lawsuit, Mastodon‘s camp gave Hinds’ estate a cheque for $80,000 in exchange for purchasing his band shares; however, the estate claimed they were not given an accurate explanation of how the band arrived at that figure. They therefore assert that they declined to cash the cheque. After the two sides split out, it seems that the estate is also upset that the Mastodon camp revealed personal details of Hinds’ life.
