Mastodon shares new single “In the Ruins” from “Marrow Deep”

Atlanta progressive metal band Mastodon has released “In the Ruins” alongside an animated music video. The track lands as the third single from their upcoming album “Marrow Deep,” which drops August 28 through Loma Vista Recordings.

“In the Ruins” follows earlier singles “Snakes for Dinner” and “Your Ghost Again.” Notably, “Marrow Deep” marks the band’s first album without late guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds. Furthermore, it stands as their first record featuring both guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira in the studio process.

Hey Beautiful Jerk directed the video. According to the director, the idea for the character Frank came together during a ten-hour emergency room visit for a severe eye infection. Beforehand, the director had spoken with drummer Brann Dailor about the song’s meaning. The track draws from recent losses experienced by Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders. Ultimately, the phrase “picking up the pieces” sparked the character’s creation.
