The GRAMMY Award-winning progressive sludge metal group Mastodon has revealed a new limited edition vinyl pressing of their most recent album, “Marrow Deep,” which includes real mastodon teeth, as per theprp. There are only 170 copies of this pressing available due to the scarcity of the material to work with. For a chance to grab a copy — which the band personally assisted in making — you can sign up for a raffle using this link. The group used a local geology department to grind the teeth and matter into a fine enough powder to be used in the vinyl, as you can see in the making-of video below.

After drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher relocated from New York to Atlanta, Georgia, they met bassist Troy Sanders and guitarist Brent Hinds at a High on Fire gig, Mastodon was formed on January 13, 2000. Sanders and Hinds were members of the band Four Hour Fogger, while Dailor and Kelliher were members of Lethargy and appeared on the Today Is the Day album “In the Eyes of God”. Soon after, the four men started collaborating on music after realizing they had a love for heavy metal icons Iron Maiden, 1970s hard rockers Thin Lizzy, and sludge metal bands Melvins and Neurosis.
