Former musician for Snot and Sevendust, Sonny Mayo, is in the process of healing after having emergency triple bypass heart surgery, as per theprp. To support his recovery, a fundraising campaign has been established, and information regarding his health has been shared by organizer Megan Wright. In 2018, Sonny experienced two heart attacks. During that period, he was found to have genetic coronary artery disease and was looking into allogeneic mesenchymal adult stem cell therapies. He left Snot in April 2025. Beyond his musical endeavors, Mayo has participated in Rock To Recovery — a charitable organization started by ex-(hed)p.e. guitarist Wesley Geer. This initiative is designed to offer assistance to individuals facing mental health issues, addiction, injuries, and other challenges through the therapeutic effects of music.

Our dear friend Sonny suffered a heart attack and had a life saving triple bypass surgery. Please support Lara and Sonny while he recovers over the next couple months. The first month home will be full time care taking for Lara and will be the highest risk for infections and sickness so bringing meals to them will support his recovery tremendously! If you can’t bring a meal please continue to cover them in prayer!

Mayo started his musical journey with a thrash metal group known as Silence in the late 1980s. The band, which included John Mayes, Benjamin Gaither, Louie Denslow, Jason Robinson, and Sonny, frequently filled venues in the Washington, D. C. area, such as the “Bayou” located in Georgetown. During his time with Silence, he produced a CD featuring nine tracks titled “Vision” and worked on a three-track tape with Alex Perialas, who was known for producing bands like Anthrax, Overkill, and S.O.D. One of the tracks from that tape, called “One Race,” was transformed into a black-and-white music video shot at the Bayou, directed by John Brenkus, the current host of Sport Science on ESPN. Afterwards, he became part of M.F. Pitbulls, collaborating with Shannon Larkin, known for his work with Wrathchild America, Ugly Kid Joe, and Amen, now with Godsmack, who provided vocals; Jamie Miller, associated with Snot, Bad Religion, and TheStart, on drums; and John “Tumor” Fahnestock, recognized for his roles in Snot, Amen, and Noise Within, playing bass.
