A week of celebrations to mark what would have been Syd Barrett’s 80th birthday year will get underway next week, bringing together music, art, film and a series of special events celebrating the life, work and extraordinary legacy of the pioneering songwriter, artist and Pink Floyd co-founder.
Supported by Barrett’s family and organised by Neil Jones, Mark Wilkinson and Rob Ayling, the celebrations include the release of the major charity album “Clowns and Jugglers, The Songs of Syd Barrett”, a landmark art exhibition, a sold-out concert at Cambridge Corn Exchange on World Mental Health Day, and a newly expanded programme of talks, Q&As and a film screening. All proceeds will be donated to mental health charities.
The anniversary will be marked with the release of a very special album, “Clowns and Jugglers, The Songs of Syd Barrett”, on 9 October 2026. Released exclusively on physical double coloured vinyl and double CD, with the CD containing additional bonus material not available on the vinyl, the album celebrates Barrett’s extraordinary creative legacy and enduring influence as a founder of Pink Floyd and through his body of solo work.
The album features a carefully curated selection of brand-new studio recordings, previously unreleased material and standout live performances spanning several years, offering fresh interpretations of some of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd’s most iconic songs. Among its highlights is David Gilmour’s performance of ‘Arnold Layne’ featuring David Bowie on vocals, alongside recordings from Pink Floyd, Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, Kula Shaker, Martha Wainwright, Soft Machine, Mystery Jets, Robyn Hitchcock, Rosalie Cunningham, Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats, Love with Johnny Echols, Henge and more. Tracks include ‘See Emily Play’, ‘Arnold Layne’, ‘Astronomy Domine’, ‘Octopus’, ‘Terrapin’, ‘Bike’, ‘Lucifer Sam’, ‘Baby Lemonade’ and ‘Golden Hair’.
The collection has been mastered by Jon Astley, whose credits include The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Who and David Bowie. The album’s sleeve features one of Syd Barrett’s most iconic images and has been created by Mark Wilkinson, famous for his work on Iron Maiden, Marillion and Judas Priest sleeves.
An exhibition exploring Barrett’s life, art and cultural impact will open on Saturday 3 October and run until 10 October at Openspace Gallery (please note the gallery will be closed on Monday 5 October), 54a Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge, CB1 7AA. The exhibition will showcase original paintings by Syd Barrett, plus a signed Mick Rock photo of Syd. Visitors will also be able to view work by a number of guest artists celebrating Syd’s life, including Barrett’s nephew Ian Barrett, Mark Wilkinson, Spadge Hopkins, Mikey Georgeson, James Wilkinson, Joe Hope, Rob Martin, Harry Gray and Will Hill.
The celebrations will culminate with a spectacular sold out concert at Cambridge Corn Exchange on 10 October (World Mental Health Day), headlined by Kula Shaker and featuring bands influenced and inspired by Syd Barrett such as Soft Machine, Men on the Border, Diana Silveira & The Psychedelic Circus, Radhika, and Pünk Floyd, with additional surprise guests.
Syd Barrett, the pioneering songwriter, artist and founding member of Pink Floyd, played his last ever live performance at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on 24 February 1972, making this the perfect venue to celebrate his life and body of work. Audiences will also experience a mesmerising liquid light show from acclaimed visual artist The Mad Alchemist (from Los Angeles), creating an immersive psychedelic spectacle inspired by Barrett’s pioneering vision. The concert follows a previous sell-out Syd Barrett celebratory show at the Corn Exchange in 2016, underlining the enduring affection for Barrett’s music and legacy in the city he called home.
The programme of events has continued to gather momentum, with three special events newly confirmed for Friday 9 October, the day before the sold-out concert. At 2pm at Openspace Gallery, Rob Chapman, author of the acclaimed Syd Barrett biography “A Very Irregular Head”, will talk about Syd, his life and work, and the writing of the book. At 5pm, acclaimed filmmaker Roddy Bogawa, director of “Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd”, will discuss Syd and the making of the documentary at Openspace Gallery. Bogawa will also show previously unseen outtakes from the film, offering an exclusive insight into material that did not appear in the finished documentary. The day will then culminate at an exclusive screening of “Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd” at Cambridge Picturehouse at 8.30pm. Following the screening, director Roddy Bogawa will be joined by producers Rupert Truman and Julius Beltrame for a special Q&A. Tickets: Cambridge Picture House tickets
