In Scandivian metal scene Denmark seems to struggle comparing with Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Danes have many badass bands, but they have not the fame of Finnish, Swedish, or Norwegian metal bands. And it’s hard to think that, in remote times, Denmark conquered a large part of Scandinavian peninsula. Hatesphere is one of those band.
Hatesphere combines thrash/death metal, and even melodic death metal, but they’re style is very punchy, They play an old school thrash/death right in the face. Fast riffs, heavy drums, dirty voice. With a good vibes playing solos, but we can find the melody especially in the arpeggios.
“Guillotine” is its twelfth studio album and it’s completely in Hatesphere‘s style. A strong, heavy and badass album. Ten songs of pure meannes and violence. Revolves around what defines the moral compass and what is morally good and bad but also what lies behind intentions, motives and actions. It paints the picture of the eternal struggle between human nature and societal constructs, and therefore poses the question – who will be the first to break: man or society. And in the end what will be the consequences.
There’s no other titles to give to this work. For the listeners it will be an explosive listening. The opening track “Chapter XII“ is an instrumental song begins with an arpeggio and finishes with a great solo in the end. Next we have the two singles “Dogma“ and the title track “Guillotine“. Two bombs for the ears and great business cards for the album. Especially in “Guillotine” you can hear the anxious and sinister arpeggios, and it will be in other songs too.
For example in sixth track “Snake Charmer“, one of best song if not the best of the album. The intro of the song we can consider it a horror intro. The song it opens with this long and scary arpeggios, and a beastly growl rises in the background.
“Morbid“ and “Cleansing“ are heavy as the other tracks, while in two specific tracks you can find some influence of other bands. The sound of the chorus of “Mouth Filled with Barbed Wire” and and the intro riff of “Bottom Feeder” are inspired by In Flames. The last two tracks, “Human Scum” and “Heresy“, close this trip of sharping riffs and powerful drumming.
“Guillotine” is an album that fan of the band or thrash/death old style we’ll love. Obviosuly is not thrash as Metallica, or melo death as In Flames, Hatesphere still having an underground style and sound. Just one thing I don’t understand of this work is why playing an intro like that with a nice solo while the mostly part of the songs of the album don’t have.
“Guillotine” will come out via Scarlet Records and will be available on 9th October.
