Below is a video of Nailbomb‘s full January 20 concert at 1720 in Los Angeles, California, as per Blabbermouth. Max Cavalera, the frontman of Soulfly and a former member of Sepultura, has been working on Nailbomb for a long time. Three guitarists—Max, Max’s son Igor Amadeus Cavalera, and Travis Stone—as well as drummers Adam Jarvis of Misery Index and Pig Destroyer and bassist Jackie Cruz of Go Ahead And Die make up Nailbomb’s current lineup.
Nailbomb‘s origins can be found in 1994, when Sepultura and Fudge Tunnel were touring in support of the previous year’s “Chaos A.D.” album. Christina, Gloria Cavalera’s stepdaughter, began dating Newport while she was on tour. The couple relocated to Phoenix, close to the Cavaleras, following the trip. Max hung around with Newport because he liked him, and soon they were jamming. Because they enjoyed the sound of their respective bands’ albums, they showed each other how they performed riffs. Newport asked how to play the “really fast” thrash riffs on Sepultura‘s “Arise”, while Max asked how to achieve the “ultra-heavy” guitar tones on Fudge Tunnel’s “Hate Songs in E Minor”.
They were hesitant to start a band, claiming they were “just messing around,” but Gloria, Cavalera’s wife, urged. Other performers, such as guitarist Dino Cazares (co-founder and guitarist of Fear Factory), Max Cavalera’s brother Igor Cavalera (co-founder of Sepultura), and D.H. Peligro (Dead Kennedys), performed guest parts at Nailbomb. Proud to “Commit Commercial Suicide”, Nailbomb‘s second album, was a live recording of the band performing at the 1995 Dynamo Open Air Festival in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
Before Cavalera declared in April 2017 that he would perform the entire Point Blank record on tour with his band Soulfly, the project remained essentially dormant for more than 20 years with no plans for the band to ever get back together or release any new music. Due of his hectic schedule, Newport did not participate in the performances. Rather, Newport’s vocal and keyboard/sampler parts were performed by Cavalera’s son, Igor Cavalera Jr., who had previously played with Soulfly as a bassist and backing vocalist.
