“There are a lot of songs that felt very cathartic” – interview with Charlotte Wessels about new album “The Obsession”

Author Flavia Andrade - 19.9.2024

Dutch singer/songwriter Charlotte Wessels is set to release her new album, “The Obsession,” via Napalm Records on September 20, 2024. The former Delain vocalist had previously released two solo albums, “Tales From Six Feet Under” (2021) and “Tales From Six Feet Under Vol II” (2022), which gained her a remarkable number of followers and led to thousands of monthly listeners on Spotify and a loyal fanbase on Patreon. While still writing and producing songs in her Six Feet Under basement home studio and sharing their first incarnations with her patrons, now she’s taking them to the next level, backed by a band of her fellow ex-Delain companions Timo Somers (guitars, additional arrangements), Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije (bass), Joey Marin de Boer (drums) and Sophia Vernikov (piano/hammond). The album also features arrangements by Vikram Shankar (Redemption, Silent Skies), cello by Elianne Anemaat, and was mixed by Guido Aalbers (Muse, Coldplay, Live, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Gathering) and mastered by award-winning mastering engineer Andy VanDette (Porcupine Tree, Deep Purple, Dream Theater).

The upcoming album combines themes like fear, obsessive thoughts and escapism, and features Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy) and Simone Simons (Epica) as guests. Each song functions like an exorcism, an attempt to cast out a little of the fear it deals with.

Chaoszine had the opportunity to chat with Charlotte Wessels, who addressed the cathartic nature of the songs in “The Obsession,” as well as the importance of Patreon for herself and the writing of her music. The heaviness of the songs was also discussed, as was the importance of the individual musicians and Vikram Shankar’s arrangements. Charlotte also spoke of her plans for touring, which will take her on a European set of dates in November after the album’s release show on October 04 in Utrecht.
