The many faces of metalcore – review of “Through Shadows” by Born of Osiris

Author Benedetta Baldin - 5.7.2025

Heavy metal is one of the greates genres in the world, because it can combine almost with anything. And if you were to ask how many combinations you would get and still be able to have a quality product, for Born of Osiris, at the moment, it is at least 13. Because 13 are the tracks of “Through Shadows”, and for 13 times I have been thoroughly amazed by the American band in question here.

These gentlemen have prepared an excellent album, that is filled with surprises, interesting twists and elegant approaches to their metalcore. I honestly don’t remember if I ever have listened to such a heterogeneous album in my life. The more the songs went on, the more I felt captured and intrigued to see what they were coming up with. From the middle eastern inspired melodies of “Inverno” to the more classic metalcore of “In Desolation“, you have plenty of opportunities to find someting you’ll definitely enjoy.

Another aspect that I really enjoyed was the alternating between harsh and clean vocals: Born of Osiris really thought of everything for everyone! If you’re wondering about the mixing, production and mastering well, that is fantastic too. In today’s world, if you don’t have an album that is well done in all of its aspects, sometimes you don’t even get considered. Well that is not the case for this band!

You’re probably thinking that these are not good enough reasons to make you want to listen to this album, but well, here’s another one for you. The band also delves deep into themes like facing difficulties, rising back up after falling or finding our way when you’re lost. So in addition of sounding great, they also speak directly to each and everyone of us.

Hopefully I’ve convinced you enough to tune in on July 11th and listen to “Through Shadows”, because the hard work this group has done should be celebrated. Born of Osiris confirm their spot as one of the most unique acts nowadays. Life can be tough, but at the very least, we have an amazing soundtrack!
