The lucky Olympics: Gojira wins the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance

Gojira received the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for their rendition of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” at the Olympic opening ceremony last year, which they performed with opera vocalist Marina Viotti. Considering how stunned everyone was by Gojira‘s Olympic performance, that was somewhat of a no-brainer. Gojira faced off against Metallica, Spiritbox, Judas Priest, and Knocked Loose. Joe Duplantier, the leader of Gojira, delivered the acceptance speech.

We are extremely excited to receive this award. We had the privilege to perform at the Olympic ceremony with Marina and Victor so this is a great day for us, obviously. We want to dedicate this award to all the bands that are pushing the boundaries, support your local artists, support your local bands because that’s where it’s at and they’re inspiring us to continue. So, thank you very much for this.

Other winners in the rock category were The Rolling Stones, who took home Best Rock Album, St. Vincent, who took home Best Rock Song, Best Alternative Music Performance, and Best Alternative Music Album, and, surprisingly, The Beatles, who took home Best Rock Performance.
