Tarja Turunen, one of Finland’s most internationally renowned artists, has released a new single and music video titled “The Trace Outlives.” The song is the final single before the release of the album “Frisson Noir” on June 12. Yesterday, Tarja appeared on the live broadcast of MTV3’s Viiden jälkeen to talk about her new album, and afterward signed autographs at the Äxä record store in Kamppi.
“The Trace Outlives” navigates the space between fragility and heaviness, where Tarja’s recognizable voice carries through riffs that are quite heavy by today’s standards. The song draws inspiration from the Japanese phenomenon of “johatsu,” which is occurring all over the world today. At the heart of johatsu is a person who, quite deliberately, disappears from their own life without leaving a trace. “The Trace Outlives” explores the emotional space between presence and absence, pondering what remains when someone decides to disappear—not just for themselves, but also for those left behind. The track features Japanese shamisen virtuoso Sayo Komada.
The “Frisson Noir” album, released by earMUSIC, can be heard in advance at the Pitchblack Playback screening at the pitch-black Gilda cinema on June 4. Those who pre-order the album can purchase tickets at a discounted price from Gilda’s online store.

“Frisson Noir” masterfully showcases Tarja’s diverse musical palette. On the album, cinematic orchestrations, Tarja’s background in classical music, and the intensity of modern metal collide, resulting in a compelling blend of diverse influences.
In addition to Dani Filth, the album features guest appearances by Marko Hietala and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), among others. The album was mixed by Grammy-winning producer Neal Avron (Linkin Park, Skillet, Disturbed). Check out the tracklist and formats at the end of the press release.
Tarja’s previous solo album of new material, “In The Raw”, was released in 2019.
On September 30, Tarja kicks off her International Frisson Live Tour 2026, which will continue through Central Europe until mid-October. More concert announcements coming soon.
