Sony has introduced a new Walkman portable music player, but anyone expecting an affordable throwback to the cassette era may be in for a surprise. The WM1ZM3 is listed at $5,899.99 on Sony’s US website, placing it firmly in the premium end of the personal audio market.
On its official product page, Sony presents the device as a revival of the Walkman’s iconic heritage. The company says it has refined the design extensively in pursuit of exceptional sound quality. That ambition, and the price, distinguish the new player from the mass-market cassette machines that originally made the Walkman famous.
The WM1ZM3 does not play cassette tapes. Instead, it is a digital music and streaming player equipped with an HD touchscreen, Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth support. It offers a dedicated portable listening option in an era when smartphones have become the default music players for most people.
Sony launched the first Walkman in Japan in 1979, helping transform how people listened to music away from home. The ability to carry a cassette player and listen privately through headphones became one of the defining consumer technology developments of its time. According to The Verge’s historical retrospective, the original device cost the equivalent of around $150 when it went on sale.
The Walkman became a cultural fixture during the 1980s, a decade when portable cassette players and personal headphones were increasingly commonplace. The Verge reported in 2014 that Sony had sold more than 200 million cassette Walkman units worldwide.
As CDs gained popularity, Sony introduced its Discman range of portable CD players. Digital and MP3 players later followed, while production of the cassette-based Walkman officially ended in 2010. The name, however, survived the shift away from physical media.
The WM1ZM3 represents another stage in that evolution: rather than offering nostalgia through cassette playback, Sony is using the Walkman name for a high-priced modern audio device. Loudwire also reported on the launch and the striking price tag.
