Down, a sludge metal ensemble, appears to be nearing the conclusion of their lengthy musical journey. “Down III: Over The Under,” the group’s most recent full-length album, was released back in 2007. In the meantime, the two-part “Down IV” EP series, their most recent release, ended in 2014. Since then, the group has faced a number of challenges, such as criticism for vocalist Phil Anselmo’s controversial white power salute in 2016, the ensuing pandemic, the return of Pantera, which took up a lot of Anselmo’s time, and the touring and aural output of the other bands on Down‘s roster. The trio wrote about seven new songs in late March, and new material started to come together earlier this year. The number of songs has now reached ten, according to guitarist Kirk Windstein (of Crowbar, among other bands) in a recent interview with That Metal Interview. Regarding that and the group’s preliminary intentions for the upcoming year, he spoke:
I’ve been in Down world [for the last few months] kinda, writing with Down and finishing up the writing for the album that’s [gonna come] out next year at some point… We’ve got 10 new songs, man. It’s awesome.
