US metal band Slipknot has played a huge number of shows in their career, and many of them feature the same songs night after night. Playing the same tunes live can cause frustration for the musicians, and the relationship with some of the audience’s favourite songs becomes distant. In an interview with the All Things Music podcast, the band’s lead singer Corey Taylor reveals that he is tired of playing Slipknot’s classic song “Wait And Bleed” live.
“I’m going to come right out and say it. I’m not the one who vetoes these things. But I vetoed the removal of one song for half the tour – you’ll laugh – ‘Wait And Bleed’, because I was fucking sick of playing it. I thought, can we do one tour where we don’t play it?” says Taylor.
“We only got a four-star review from Kerrang! magazine as the headline act for Download precisely because we didn’t play ‘Wait And Bleed’. I was so angry, like ‘are you fucking kidding me?’ I was so angry. I was deliberately like, ‘I don’t fucking want to play this song ever again’. You know what? I’m the motherfucker. We did it.”
Despite this, the band still plays the song on their gigs.
“It’s fucking up my solo set now. So there you go. I can’t escape it. People love that song. It’s not a bad song. It’s just old. And I, like everyone else who makes music, love the fact that there are songs left behind. But fuck me for singing it at gigs“.
