Maya Annik Bedward’s feature documentary “Black Zombie” will be executive produced by Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, according to The Hollywood Reporter as per Blabbermouth. This weekend, the movie will have its world premiere at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. A feature documentary called “Black Zombie” explores the most well-known yet misinterpreted monster of our day. The film explores popular misrepresentations of the zombie, tracing its origins from Haitian legend to Hollywood horror, in order to uncover its relation to slavery and resistance movements.
The feature documentary “Black Zombie” explores themes of slavery, rebellion, and the living dead. The long-term effects of cultural appropriation are another topic covered in the movie. The movie follows the zombie’s development from its beginnings in Haiti to its hegemony in Hollywood, eventually exposing its little-known link to slavery and resistance activities. Slash, Yves-Grégory Francois, Anderson Mojica, musician and Vodou priest Erol Josák, legendary special effects designer Tom Savini (“Night Of The Living Dead”), and director Zandashé Brown (“Horror Noire”) all make appearances in “Black Zombie”.
“Black Zombie” challenges viewers to reevaluate the legacy of one of horror’s most lucrative and enduring symbols by reclaiming the story from a Haitian perspective.
