Simon Gallup leaves The Cure: Says he is “Fed up of betrayal”

Author Samuel Järvinen - 16.8.2021

Bassist Simon Gallup, who joined The Cure in 1979, announces that he is leaving the band.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I am no longer a member of The Cure,” Gallup writes on his Facebook page. “Good luck and success to them all…”

In the comments section of his post, Gallup said he was “tired of the constant cheating” and that his health was good.

The only member who has been with the band longer than Gallup, lead singer Robert Smith, has not commented. However, the band’s long-time keyboard player Roger O’Donnell took to Twitter to comment.

“My mate just told me he saw Lol buying a bass from Guitar Center?”, O’Donnell tweeted, referring to keyboardist Lol Tolhurst, who left The Cure in 1989.

Robert Smith told The Irish Times in 2018 that Gallup’s contribution to the band was so great that “you couldn’t call the band The Cure” if the bassist decided to leave one day.
