February 2000 saw the formation of Silverstein. In August of that year, they self-released “Summer’s Stellar Gaze”, their debut EP. Billy Hamilton, a local fan who discovered the band’s need for a bassist on the Internet message board “The 905 Board” (an outreach board for the Ontario area that was once only for local musicians), joined the band after multiple lineup changes. After Told assisted him in learning the song lyrics, he joined the band in December 2000. He made his formal debut with Silverstein during a rehearsal on Boxing Day (December 26, 2000). Richard McWalter, the band’s founding guitarist, departed the following spring to pursue an engineering degree in Victoria, British Columbia. Neil Boshart, Shane Told’s boyhood friend, took his position.

Before embarking on their first tour in Eastern Canada, the new lineup produced a second EP, “When the Shadows Beam”. As Hamilton tried to finish his secondary studies one semester ahead of schedule, the band signed to Victory Records in October 2002 with a full lineup.

“When Broken Is Easily Fixed”, the band’s first full-length debut album, was recorded in the studio the following January. Producer Justin Koop recorded it at Unity Gain and Mount Fairview studios, and Victory Records released it on May 20, 2003. Six tracks from Silverstein‘s earlier EPs, including “When the Shadows Beam” and “Summer’s Stellar Gaze“, were re-recorded. Over 200,000 copies of “When Broken Is Easily Fixed” were sold, exceeding the band’s expectations.
