Finnish symphonic metal band Rose Heaven have released their new single “Sailing Flame”, offering the first glimpse into their upcoming sophomore album “The Tail Of Mystical Lights”, which is set to arrive in spring 2027.
Built around themes of adventure, self-discovery and following your dreams, “Sailing Flame” encourages listeners to leave yesterday behind, step aboard a metaphorical ship sailing on flames and embrace whatever the journey might bring.
According to Rose Heaven keyboardist Rasmus Kujala, the initial idea for the song came from a desire to travel around the world, explore unfamiliar places and, at the heart of it all, discover more about oneself.
“The song started from this thought of how amazing it would be to travel around the world, explore different corners of it and, at the core of that journey, search for yourself and find your own thing. When I started thinking about what the song should sound like, it was immediately clear that it needed to have a huge sense of adventure. Listening to the finished version now, I think that feeling comes across really well,” Kujala explains.
Some of the early ideas were considerably more ambitious. Kujala originally envisioned the song travelling musically from pyramids and deserts into jungles and temples before eventually reaching the snowy landscapes of Finland. While that particular concept was ultimately abandoned, the sense of adventure remained an important part of the finished track.
Thematically, “Sailing Flame” also shares some DNA with “Dream Of Symphony” from Rose Heaven’s first album, although the new song was never intentionally written as a sequel.
“‘Dream Of Symphony’ is about finding your dream, while ‘Sailing Flame’ is more of an encouragement to go out and search for yourself and your dreams and leave yesterday behind. I’ve always been a big dreamer and a complete optimist, so I think themes like dreaming might stay with me at the songwriting table for quite a long time,” Kujala says.
Rose Heaven vocalist Sandra reveals that finding the right vocal melodies took some time, particularly because “Sailing Flame” had already been chosen as the first single.
“It actually took me quite a while to work through the vocal melodies and figure out how certain words would fit. It wasn’t the easiest song to get everything exactly where I wanted it, especially since we had already decided it would be a single, so naturally my expectations for the vocals were pretty high. I wanted it to be catchy and interesting. It took me a while to warm up to the idea of this being the single because the right ideas didn’t immediately fall into place, but eventually they did,” Sandra explains.
When working on the vocals, keyboardist Rasmus Kujala usually demonstrates his initial melody ideas on piano before Sandra takes those ideas and adapts them to her own vocal style. Their visions do not always align immediately, often requiring compromises, but with “Sailing Flame” their ideas came together particularly naturally.
“For me, this is definitely a feel-good song. Its message is personally important because I’ve never really dared to dream about things. So this serves as a good reminder to myself to just go for it,” Sandra adds.
Musically, “Sailing Flame” retains some familiar elements from Rose Heaven’s previous material while offering the first indication of how the band’s sound has developed. According to the band, its energetic and engaging character made the track a natural choice for the first single.
The song is only the first step towards Rose Heaven’s second album “The Tail Of Mystical Lights”, which is scheduled for release in spring 2027. More singles will follow ahead of the album’s release.
