In 2003, Parkway Drive was formed. ‘The Parkway House’ was the name of the street where the band’s home rehearsal facility and live performance were situated. According to the 2009 documentary Parkway Drive: The DVD, ‘Parkway House’ served as ‘a tiny sanctuary for us and all our pals’ because punk rock and hardcore punk bands lacked a place to practice and play. I Killed the Prom Queen singer Michael Crafter, who was visiting from Adelaide, saw the group and became interested in them when they performed for the first time at the Byron Bay Youth Centre. After the release of the I Killed the Prom Queen/Parkway Drive: Split CD in June 2003, the bands spent the remainder of the year touring Australia.
The band opened for Shadows Fall, Chimaira, Hatebreed, and Alexisonfire on their following Australian tours after signing with Resist Records and releasing the “Don’t Close Your Eyes” EP in 2004. In an early 2005 comment on the EP, Winston McCall expressed surprise, saying, “for six songs it’s done amazing for us…I’m surprised that kids picked it up so well.” In under two weeks, Parkway Drive recorded their first full-length album, “Killing with a Smile”, with Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz after Shaun Cash replaced Brett Versteeg.
