In 2007, Austin Lunn created the American black metal band Panopticon in Louisville, Kentucky. August 15, 2025, saw the release of their most recent album, “Laurentian Blue”. The band has been characterized as “wrenching in its intensity but also sweeping and spectacular” and as “musically progressive and ideologically open-minded, tackling issues around religion, politics, ecology, and self-identity.”It has also been said that Lunn’s poetic approach is “natural, organic, and methodical, masterful in its writing, fiery and alive in its execution.”

Lunn wrote all of the songs and performed all of the instruments during the project’s initial studio-only phase. 2008 saw the release of a self-titled first album. Panopticon has subsequently grown to include a roster of musicians for live performances, but Lunn is still the only songwriter and studio musician. With the addition of Appalachian instruments including the banjo, violin, bells, and acoustic guitar, the project’s sound has been described as black metal with bluegrass and Appalachian folk influences. Anarchists and environmentalist intellectuals are frequently mentioned in Lunn’s lyrics. Additionally, he has addressed specific issues such as blue-collar labor legislation, the foster care system, and Native American oppression.
