Waiting is the only option, sometimes. But it’s glad to wait when the final result is something so enjoyable. And Funebrarum’s long-awaited return arrives like a tomb opening after years of silence. “Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence”, the band’s first full-length in seven years, is a reminder of why their name carries such weight in the death metal underground.
This record feels old and new at the same time. To me, it’s a work that has the spirit of late ’80s and ’90s death metal, but it’s also shaped by years of experience, lineup changes, and a hard-earned identity. It bears the burden of years spent in motion and stillness. It sounds like something that was dug up rather than made; I guess that’s an appropriate figure of speech, am I right?
The way the music was produced, mixed, and mastered is very old-school. The sound is a little flat, which seems to be on purpose, and it reminds me of the dark, suffocating sound of early underground death metal. It’s not clear if this was a conscious choice or just how the recording process went, but the result is clear: the album feels raw and hostile to modern polish.
For listeners who crave the cavernous, tape-rotted aura of the genre’s formative years, this approach will feel authentic rather than limiting. If I may say so, the album’s finest moment arrives at the end. “The Whispering Cathedral – Epilogue” is a towering, atmospheric closer that distills Funebrarum‘s essence in a final exhalation that elevates the entire album.
“Beckoning the Void of Eternal Silence” is not meant to bring in new people or follow trends. This album is for people who want death metal that is dark, unrelenting, and steeped in the genre’s early roots. So if you’re into this, don’t miss the album out on May 29th, 2026!
