Founded in 2008, Oathbreaker is a Ghent-based Belgian metal band that is currently signed to Deathwish Inc. The group is made up of drummer Wim Coppers, vocalist Caro Tanghe, who performs clean and harsh vocals, and guitarists Lennart Bossu and Gilles Demolder. They belong to Church of Ra, an artistic collaborative founded by Amenra, a band that also includes Caro and Lennart. Similar to Amenra, Oathbreaker combined extreme metal and art music aesthetics while emerging from the Belgian underground hardcore punk scene. Caro first became friends with Gilles when he was fourteen years old. After meeting Lennart Bossu, the two created a band that performed live alongside bands like Rise and Fall in the Belgian hardcore scene.

Before splitting from their drummer, their style gradually evolved. After meeting Ivo Debrabandere in 2008, they changed their name to Oathbreaker and wrote and released their first EP. A line from Neurosis‘ song “The Eye of Every Storm” inspired the band’s moniker. Over the course of the following two years, the band started writing their debut album, “Maelstrøm”, piecing together song ideas and tiny fragments that they brought to rehearsal. In an interview before to the album’s release, Lennart Bossu stated, “It’s the only way we know how to write songs, even though there are faster ways I’m sure.” They met with Kurt Ballou to mix it and Michael Neyt and Lander Cluyse to engineer and record it in the autumn of 2010.
