Nicky Calonne and Tim Lyakhovetskiy founded Nekrogoblikon in Palo Alto, California, in 2006. In Lyakhovetskiy’s basement, the two of them recorded Nekrogoblikon’s debut album, “Goblin Island”. Lyakhovetskiy found Ashleigh Carracino, Alex Duddy, Spencer Bartz, Alex Alereza, and Austin Nickel to complete the band when he returned to school at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before Bartz relocated to Japan and Eddie Trager took his place, the group performed eleven gigs.

The band released Stench on July 19, 2011. The Los Angeles Times music blog “Pop and Hiss” gave “Stench” a favourable review, praising its songwriting and technical skill and calling its use of electronic elements “surprisingly well.” The album received a 4.5/5 rating from Metal Sucks, which also lauded its technical quality and said it was more professional than Goblin Island. The album received a 9 out of 10 from Blistering, who described it as “fun and entertaining.”

Brandon Dermer directed the band’s music video for “No One Survives,” which was released in September 2012. The band had never thought of dressing up or bringing a goblin character on stage, and the goblin music theme was only a humorous concept prior to the publication of the video. As an assistant at a film production and management company at the time, Dermer had some experience creating music videos with actor and comedian Jon Lajoie. As a fan who was keen to assist with the creation of a music video, Dermer approached the band. At first, the band declared they wouldn’t dress up and be likened to Gwar, rejecting the idea.
