In June 1990, guitarist Andrew Craighan, drummer Rick Miah, singer Aaron Stainthorpe, and guitarist Calvin Robertshaw founded My Dying Bride in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Miah and Craighan used to be Abiosis members. Tim Walker of Voltage Records produced the band’s demo, “Towards the Sinister”, which was released after six months of rehearsal. A passage from the song “Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium” served as the inspiration for the title. The band’s debut single, “God Is Alone,” was subsequently released by Listenable, a small French label. They were signed by Peaceville Records after the single sold out almost instantly, allowing them to release “Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium”, their debut EP including bassist Adrian Jackson.

“As the Flower Withers”, their debut album, was released shortly after the EP. Following a lengthy tour of the UK and Europe, “As the Flower Withers” was followed by their next EP, “The Thrash of Naked Limbs”, in 1992. Their current drummer suffered a serious fall while filming the accompanying video, which led to the cancellation of another tour. When Martin Powell joined My Dying Bride in 1993 as a violinist and keyboards, they began recording “Turn Loose the Swans”, their second studio album. when their album “As the Flower Withers”, the violin has been used significantly more when Martin Powell joined. “I Am the Bloody Earth”, another EP, and a tour followed the album’s release that year.
