On January 15, Mr. Bungle performed their 1999 song “Retrovertigo,” which is an exciting development for the band, as per theprp. During their performance at the Teatro Estudio Cavaret in Zapopan, Mexico, that unexpected setlist addition was made. The avant-garde metal group has mostly kept to their early thrash metal releases after getting back together in 2019.

For some of their fan base, the choice to effectively block off the body of work from the 1990s that earned them significant praise has been a difficult one. It’s unknown what caused this shift, but Mr. Bungle hadn’t performed that song live since 2000 until last night’s stroll down memory lane.

Mr. Bungle is currently touring Latin America as the opening act for Avenged Sevenfold, a band that covered “Retrovertigo” in 2017. The multi-platinum alternative metal group referred to themselves as “massive fans of Mr. Bungle” at the time.

Below is some fan-shot video of “Retrovertigo” from last night’s performance. Although this is the first time Mr. Bungle has performed the song in decades, vocalist Mike Patton did perform it live during a Mondo Cane performance in 2019.

In 1985, the American experimental rock group Mr. Bungle was founded in Eureka, California. The band, which has undergone numerous configurations throughout the course of its career, is most recognized for its experimental rock phase. Heavy metal, avant-garde jazz, ska, disco, and funk were among the many musical styles it frequently cycled among in a single song during this period, which was further accentuated by frontman Mike Patton’s diverse singing style. During this time, the band also used unusual song structures and samples, played a variety of instruments, concealed the identity of its members by donning masks, jumpsuits, and other costumes, and performed a wide range of cover songs live.
