Metallica fans will soon have the opportunity to explore more than four decades of the band’s visual history when The Art Of Metallica opens at the Haight Street Art Center in San Francisco on November 5.
The exhibition, running through January 10, 2027, brings together original album artwork, concert posters, rare memorabilia and fan-created pieces documenting the legendary metal band’s evolution.
Among its biggest attractions are the original paintings used for the covers of “Ride The Lightning” and “Master Of Puppets”, two of Metallica‘s most influential releases. The exhibition also traces the development of the band’s visual identity through concert flyers, merchandise and artwork spanning their early thrash metal years to the present day.
A dedicated section will celebrate the work of artist Pushead, whose distinctive illustrations became closely associated with Metallica during the 1980s and 1990s. Visitors will also be able to explore the evolution of the band’s iconic logo and view banners and artwork contributed by fans from around the world.
Another highlight is a previously unseen mosaic-style portrait of the band created entirely from Dunlop guitar picks by artist John Arena. The piece has been signed by all four Metallica members and the artist, and will be offered through a charitable sweepstakes benefiting the band’s All Within My Hands foundation.
The exhibition also pays tribute to Metallica‘s deep connection with the San Francisco Bay Area. Among the historical items on display is the original marquee sign from the Old Waldorf, a venue where the band performed during its early years in 1982.
Visitors can additionally explore the band’s collaborations with local sports teams and try the Metallica Remastered pinball machine in an interactive section.
As previously reported by Chaoszine, the exhibition celebrates the relationship between the band’s musical legacy and the visual artists who helped shape its identity.
The Art Of Metallica opens on November 5 with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free, and regular gallery hours will run Thursday through Sunday from noon until 6 p.m.
The exhibition takes place at the Haight Street Art Center, located at 215 Haight Street in San Francisco.
