Virtuoso guitarist Marty Friedman first picked up the instrument at age 14 after attending a transformative Kiss concert. Largely self-taught, he immediately gravitated toward writing original material over learning covers — reasoning with early pragmatism that mistakes in original compositions could simply be passed off as deliberate artistic choices. Utilizing an event center space managed by a friend’s mother, Friedman’s early band rehearsals quickly morphed into makeshift live performances, drawing crowds from across the local rural area. He went on to hone his craft across several outfits, including Deuce and Hawaii (formerly Vixen), before co-founding the seminal neoclassical metal band Cacophony alongside guitarist Jason Becker. Celebrated for its intricate twin-guitar harmonies and counterpoint arrangements, the duo set a new standard for technical guitar work. During this period, Friedman also recorded guitar for Christian rock outfit Shout‘s 1989 album “In Your Face” and tracked 1988 demos for Jet Red (later issued on their 2009 release “Flight Plan”), culminating in the August 1988 launch of his celebrated debut solo album, “Dragon’s Kiss”.
