Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström founded the Swedish heavy metal group Katatonia in Stockholm in 1991. As a way for the two to express their passion for death metal, the band began as a studio-only endeavour. Apart from the band’s founders, the roster was a rotating door of musicians throughout the 1990s, most notably Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth for a while, as their growing fame prompted them to add more members for live performances. Following two albums, “Dance of December Souls” (1993) and “Brave Murder Day” (1996), the band shifted from the screamed vocals of black and death metal to a more conventional melodic style of progressive rock due to issues with Renkse’s vocal cords and new musical influences.
