Founded in Los Angeles, California, L7 is an American rock group that was active from 1985 to 2001 before reforming in 2014. Suzi Gardner (guitars, vocals), Donita Sparks (vocals, guitars), Jennifer Finch (bass, vocals), and Dee Plakas (drums, vocals) make up their longest-running lineup. L7 has travelled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia, and South America in addition to releasing seven studio albums. “Pretend We’re Dead” peaked in the top 10 of the Billboard Modern Rock chart in 1992 after receiving a lot of play on alternative radio in the United States. Because of their music and appearance, L7 is frequently connected to the grunge movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and because they are an all-female band, they have occasionally been associated with riot grrrl.

L7 founded Rock for Choice in 1991 and has consistently supported political causes. “L7: Pretend We’re Dead,” a documentary about the band, debuted in 2016.

Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner founded L7 in 1985. Both artists were involved in Echo Park’s art punk scene and had first connected at the LA Weekly’s cultural center in 1984. Sparks called their meeting “one of the happiest days of my life” after listening to Gardner play a recording of her unfinished compositions. There was a noticeable connection between the music they were both interested in making.
