Insomnium is:

NIILO SEVÄNEN (VOCALS / BASS)
MARKUS VANHALA (GUITARS)
VILLE FRIMAN (GUITARS / VOCALS)
MARKUS HIRVONEN (DRUMS)
TOMY LAISTO (GUITAR / VOCALS)

In the spring of 1997, Insomnium was established in Joensuu. Guitarists Ville Friman and Markus Hirvonen, who were in a lower grade at the same high school, were invited to join bassist Niilo Sevänen and drummer Tapani Pesonen for the school’s spring festival performance. Sevänen had written a piece for four acoustic guitars for the performance. After Sevänen and Friman discovered a shared artistic path, the group soon started penning their own songs in addition to continuing to perform as a cover band.

Hirvonen became the band’s drummer in 1998 when Pesonen left to start his military service. The second guitarist was Timo Partanen. In the spring of 1999, the band produced its first demo featuring Friman (guitar), Hirvonen (drums), Partanen (guitar), and Sevänen (vocals, bass). By that time, the band had established its moniker. *Underneath the Moonlit Waves*, a second demo, was made available in 2000.
