American death metal veterans Immolation recently visited Helsinki as part of their European tour alongside Marduk and Mayhem. The bands performed at a sold-out Kulttuuritalo on February 26.
During the visit, Immolation vocalist and bassist Ross Dolan sat down to discuss his long career as a metal vocalist, the band’s legacy, and their upcoming studio album “Descent”, which will be released on April 10 via Nuclear Blast.
Born in November 1969, Dolan is one of the founding members of Immolation. Since the band’s formation in 1988, he has remained its vocalist and bassist and one of the most recognizable voices in death metal.
Dolan is widely known for his extremely deep yet articulate vocal style. Unlike many death metal vocalists, his growl remains surprisingly clear, allowing listeners to understand the lyrics while maintaining the intensity associated with the genre.
Maintaining this kind of vocal consistency for decades is rare in extreme metal. Many vocalists gradually raise their pitch over time due to the strain the style places on the vocal cords. Dolan’s voice, however, has remained remarkably consistent since Immolation’s 1991 debut album “Dawn of Possession”.
Now, nearly four decades into their career, Immolation are preparing to release their twelfth studio album “Descent”, continuing the band’s legacy as one of the most respected names in death metal. You can watch the full interview with Ross Dolan below.
