In May 1995, guitarist Maik Weichert and drummer Matthias Voigt created Heaven Shall Burn under the name Before The Fall (often spelt as B4 the Fall). In winter 1997, the band released their first demo, “The Eve of the Storm”, and changed their name to Consense after playing a few performances. Cousins Marcus and Eric Bischoff joined the group as bassist and vocalist, respectively, at the beginning of 1998. Consense signed a deal with Deeds of Revolution Records after recording a second demo with this lineup. In the summer of 1998, the band started recording their debut EP, “In Battle…”, but before the EP was released, they decided to change its name once more to Heaven Shall Burn. Deeds of Revolution published the EP.

In late 1998, Deeds of Revolution Records published the EP, and in 1999, a split album with labelmates Fall of Serenity was issued. Following Michael Hartmann’s departure, Patrick Schleitzer took over as the band’s second guitarist. They signed with Lifeforce Records following their joint release with Fall of Serenity. In 2000, Lifeforce released “Asunder”, Heaven Shall Burn‘s debut album, and “The Split Program”, their first joint album with Caliban. Heaven Shall Burn went on to tour South America and Europe. Heaven Shall Burn reissued the “In Battle…” EP and released their second album, “Whatever It May Take”, in 2002. The band started a new tour cycle to promote the album, which took them to several nations.
