The American sludge metal group Crowbar was founded in 1990 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Kirk Windstein, the only consistent member of Crowbar, is the band’s lead singer and guitarist. Windstein has acknowledged that he dislikes the name “sludge metal,” although Crowbar and other bands in the New Orleans heavy metal scene invented it by mixing the aggressiveness of hardcore punk with a sluggish, melancholy doom metal sound. The group has also covered songs from other genres, such as Led Zeppelin‘s “No Quarter” on “Crowbar”, Iron Maiden‘s “Remember Tomorrow” on “Odd Fellows Rest”, and Gary Wright’s “Dream Weaver” on “Equilibrium”. The group was founded in 1988 when Kirk Windstein joined ShellShock, a hardcore punk band from New Orleans.
