Eternal Tears of Sorrow, a metal band formed in Pudasjärvi in 1994, has officially announced the end of its career, according to the band’s founders, guitarist Jarmo Puolakanaho and bassist-singer Altti Veteläinen. The band has been on hiatus for quite some time now, and has been on hiatus until 2023. The decision to quit is a joint one, with no drama or disagreements.
This one of the pioneers of Finnish melodic death metal released a total of 7 albums between 1997 and 2013; “Sinner’s Serenade” (1997), “Vilda Mánnu” (1998), “Chaotic Beauty” (2000), “A Virgin and a Whore” (2001), “Before the Bleeding Sun” (2006), “Children of the Dark Waters” (2009) and “Saivon Lapsi” (2013).
The band also managed to tour a total of 13 countries during their career.
The band has a strong fan base around the world and social media posts by the band and its members are full of wistful comments and reminiscences of the past.
The band will not be holding any farewell events, and there is no plans for a compilation release. No unreleased songs were left in the drawers.
Thirty years may seem like an endless time, but in retrospect it was just a blink of an eye. Lots of memorable moments that we wouldn’t trade for anything. And even though this band is coming to an end, the music-making will continue, with EToS members’ bands releasing both melodic death metal and gothic metal albums this year and next. We thank all the people who played in the band, supported the band in other ways and of course our loyal fans for these great years Jarmo Puolakanaho.
In 2026, Eternal Tears of Sorrow will also be part of the Metal Age exhibition at the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia in Oulu, which presents the most important northern metal bands and metal music culture from the 70s to the 90s.
