Recorded before the untimely passings of Disfear‘s highly influential vocalist Tomas Lindberg and powerhouse drummer Marcus Andersson, “The Last Nail” serves as the ultimate exclamation point for one of the genre’s most iconic groups.
A fitting addition to Lindberg and Andersson’s legacy— the album is a tribute to those who fell before them, and those who will fall behind them. Disfear continues to evolve with every turn around the sun and every roll of the dice. In spite of their respective illnesses, Lindberg, Andersson, and the rest of Disfear insisted “The Last Nail” be released urgently as a defiant triumph.
Disfear comments: “Struggle, pain, and loss. Since Live the Storm we have now lost 3 members of our band to cancer – Henrik, Tomas, and most recently Marcus. While we lost Henrik shortly after Live the Storm, Tomas and Marcus stayed active with us and were part of our new album, The Last Nail, which we’re announcing today. Written over the past 14 years and recorded during the past 3 years, we’ve been actively preparing The Last Nail over the course of the last year.”
They continue: “While our dear friends and bandmates Tomas, passed over a year ago and Marcus, only a few short weeks ago, they both wanted this record to come out as quickly as possible. Before Marcus passed, he saw a final copy of the album, and we wish to share the same joy it brought him, with you. Tomas and Marcus were extremely proud of their performances on this album, as we all are, and we invite you to hear their final performances on The Last Nail.“
Disfear adds: “In April of 2024, during our last session together, we had a wonderful time. We didn’t think of the dark stuff. These were times of laughter. Robert Samsonowitz shot the last photos of The Last Nail line-up together at the studio. We will always cherish those times. The Last Nail will be released on November 20th via Relapse Records. Marcus, Tomas, and Henrik, this one is for you.”
“The Last Nail” is scorching from its onset. Album opener “A Circle of Disease” and first single “Early Graves” kick off the album with a one-two punch at blazing tempos; the patented D-beat crashes against snarling guitars as Lindberg ruminates on the fragile state of our world, and the inevitable end caused by the very systems that control us:
“Silenced through comfort
All passion in vain
Mechanical slaves
To systematic death”
During a visit to Welfare Sounds in Gothenburg in spring 2023, Lindberg was scheduled to make a few edits to the demo vocals already recorded. He instead whipped through all eight tracks, re-recording the vocals for the album simply because the creative impetus was there. Later that year Lindberg received a cancer diagnosis that would largely sideline his creative pursuits. At the time of recording his vocals, Lindberg was reckoning with images of death, disease and darkness in his lyrics, portending his yet-to-be-diagnosed illness.
With instrumentation tracked at God City with Kurt Ballou and at Welfare Sounds with Per Stålberg, mixing done by Magnus Lindberg at Redmount Studios and mastering by Sören Von Malmborg at Cosmos Mastering, “The Last Nail” shows a band unflinching in the face of the unfortunate circumstances around them. Their loose rock’n’roll attitude slithers into the gaps of their trademark intensity; rather than diminishing its impact, these passages enhance the signature Disfear sound. Unrelenting and unyielding, the album proves to be one of rock, metal and punk’s most daring releases in recent memory. With “The Last Nail”, Disfear showcase their true mettle.
