Despiser from Oulu, Northern Finland, is releasing its debut single “Live for Nothing” with a music video January 29. Chaoszine is previewing the video before its official release. You can find the video at the end of the article.
The song is wondering the meaning of life (and death) from the personal Northern point of view. The video is directed by Petri Sara and his visual execution fits the grim theme and barren environment perfectly.
Despiser describes its sound as a combination of melancholic melodies and rough riff-driven metal. Live for Nothing is a first sneakpeak from the upcoming EP. If the ambiance is speaking to you, soon there will be a lot more to enjoy!
“Finally, goddammit! Live has pretty much been the opening song of our gigs. It’s also one of the first songs I’ve ever written for Despiser. It’s a good, lively start and it brings out the themes of the band quite well”, the founder of the band and guitarist vocalist Tomi Tuomaala says.
“The main point of the song is the question: ‘Why live for nothing?’ But does it necessarily mean taking your own life? Could suicide be more metaphorical solution to one’s current situation in life and whole identity?”, the bassist and the co-writer of the lyrics Antti Halonen says.

The director and writer of the video Petri Sara had a vision straight away for the dark and stylish theme. The main character played by Jan Juvonen has made all the preparations to end his days towards the unknown. But is the departing literal or not? Well, it’s up to the viewer to decide.
”Live for Nothing is visually probably the most prestige video I’ve made so far”, Sara comments.
The video was shot under highway 4 leading to the North under challenging circumstances. No one called it quits during the long day. Sara is describing himself as ”The Master of Discomfort”. He has a point. If everything had been nice and easy, would the video transmit the melancholic and raw state of mind and the sadness of a Northern man?
“You have to suffer a bit and be pissed off to bring out the art. Too clean and polished material will stir strong emotions. The location and the guys brought the ruggedness I like a lot. Rough shit filmed with fancy gear warms up my heart!”
Despiser was originally found in Oulu in 2017. The band has played live shows in Finland and is hitting up new stages in 2026 with their first official releases. Besides Tuomaala and Halonen the line-up includes Eetu Kortetjärvi (guitars) and Ville Vitikka (drums).
