Danny Wimmer Presents announced in 2018 that the Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival would take the place of their previous Rock on the Range festival, which was held at Mapfre Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, USA (renamed Historic Crew Stadium in 2020). An estimated 120,000 people attended the three-day first festival, which took place from May 17–19. The whole roster for Sonic Temple 2020 was made public in December 2019. Slipknot was scheduled to perform on Saturday, while Metallica was scheduled to perform on Friday and Sunday.

Following frontman James Hetfield’s admission into a drug recovery program, it was revealed in February 2020 that Metallica would be replaced as headliners by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Friday and Tool on Sunday. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the festival the next month. Due to the ongoing pandemic, it was canceled once more in 2021.
