Deep Purple will release their new studio album, “SPLAT!”, on July 3 via earMusic! Pre-orders for the album are now open at this link.
Founded in 1968, Deep Purple has sold over 120 million records during its nearly 60-year career and secured its place in the history books of music. Over the years, the band hasn’t really focused on preserving its legacy; instead, they continue to expand it year after year. This year is no exception, and the new “SPLAT!” album will arrive to everyone’s delight in July.
“It feels like the current Deep Purple lineup is, in the same way, a very contemporary version of the Deep Purple that existed in the 70s,” says singer Ian Gillan.
The album is produced by longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper). Together, they have created an album that draws on the sound, attitude, and approach that make Deep Purple, well, Deep Purple.
The band says the new album is their heaviest in decades, and it was recorded live in the studio in their usual style.
“I have to say that we’ve now fully returned to material that fits in with songs like ‘Highway Star,’ ‘Smoke on the Water,’ and ‘Lazy’—to the dynamics, balance, and joy that our music had from 1969 to 1973,” the frontman continues.
At the heart of the album is an idea developed by Ian Gillan. Instead of the record dealing with the end in terms of destruction, it portrays the end in terms of transformation:” SPLAT!” examines the end of humanity not in an apocalyptic sense, but as a metamorphosis transcending physical existence. The concept will be revealed over the coming weeks leading up to the album’s release.
“Deep Purple is in a good place,” Gillan concludes.
The tour, featuring over 80 shows, kicks off on June 11 at the Espoo Metro Arena, continuing the next day, June 12, at the Tampere Nokia Arena. Tickets are on sale now.
