Guys, I’m scared. I’m really scared. But scared in a good way, though. Because let’s face it, deathcore is not my genre. And yet, this six-piece band from New York has managed to throw my convictions about this genre out of the window, replacing them with a newfound love, admiration and gratitude. I’m talking about Face Yourself, and they are releasing very soon their EP “Martyr”.
Not many bands are able to achieve the perfect equilibrium between relentless violence and emotional depth in contemporary deathcore, but man, has Face Yourself just lifted the standard. This group advances into a new league that so far has maybe two or three worthy opponents.
My favorite track has to be “The Poet”, but overall, the EP is a masterwork of modern heaviness from beginning to end. Their sound seems to have been called from the depths of hell, and yet, each finely produced tune channels clarity and structure. However, the emotional resonance of this release is what really makes it unique. The EP has an edge that is both contemplative and fierce because of the eerie aura that permeates the pandemonium.
With a clarity that pierces like a knife, Yasmine Liverneaux’s vocals go far into the darker levels of the human experience, where vulnerability meets survival instinct. But she isn’t the only highlight of this release: the effort of the whole group is crystal, and they show so much potential in not even 15 minutes of running time. “Martyr” is here to rewrite the chapter of this band, expanding into so much more than simple music entertainment.
So if you are into the modern approach of deathcore, you absolutely cannot miss Face Yourself. You’ll find out that sometimes hidden gems are right in front of your eyes, ready to be discovered, enjoyed and shared with everybody else.
