After four years Cult of Luna came back with its tenth album “In the Shadow of Your Shadow”. It will be released on 6th November via the label CRK. And it’s a very Cult of Luna‘s style album. Melancholy, dark, ferocious, and with a cold soul that manages to warm you up in the calmest moments.

Cult of Luna, a hymn to darkness

For the ones know the genre, they know how post rock or metal is a soul-piercing genre. Besides mixing with sludge metal everything become more emotional. And that’s the Cult of Luna‘s discography, a band that don’t wanna know to stand still. As the frontman said:

“Stagnation is the only thing that scares me. I’ve said this in every interview I’ve done for the past 25 years: I don’t care whether or not people think we’re repeating ourselves. As long as we feel like we aren’t, we will continue to do this.”

So the album is the one of the heaviest of the discography, and describes every dark feeling in us and around us. The emotional voices, escpecially the unclean, and arpeggios make their best. The other instuments as the bass, drums, and piano tend to amplify all those feelings of the lyrics. While the background voices make everything etereal.

There are two songs in collaboration: “Sadness Will Reign” feat. Gojira‘s Joe Duplantier, and “One More Day”, feat. Wovenhand‘s David Eugene Edwards. Anyway, the album begins with powerful title-track, while the third track, “Landby”, is an instrumental post rock song, but maybe the best is in the last track “Burial”. This song explores the theme of death. It was inspired by the arc of life, and what’s next after death. As the singer Johannes Persson says:

“I’ve always had a non-dramatic relationship with death. I think it’s because I grew up in a religious environment where death was not considered the end. Even though I’m an atheist now and believe that what happens after you die is the same as what happened before you were born, the subject of the end, and how it makes people want to throw themselves into the vast nothingness, has always fascinated me.”

In conclusion, the humanity and its struggle is the centre of album’s topics. And in these modern times humanity seems suffering a lot. This work longs 71 minutes and it has the power to dig in your soul with all its potential. After nearly thirty active-years, this Swedish band from Umeå still rock on.
