Dark Funeral was founded in 1993 by guitarists David Parland, also known as Blackmoon, and Mikael Svanberg, also known as Lord Ahriman. Shortly after, Joel Andersson, also known as Draugen, and Paul Mäkitalo, also known as Themgoroth, who had previously been with the band Scum, were hired as bassist and vocalist. Dan Swanö of Edge of Sanity fame produced Dark Funeral‘s self-titled EP, which was recorded at Unisound Studio in January 1994 and released on May 4, 1994. Alongside bands like other live debuts Gorgoroth and Marduk, who were also doing their first concert overseas, Dark Funeral played their first show that same day at Lusa Lottes Pub in Oslo, Norway. After the EP was recorded, Draugen left Dark Funeral, and Equimanthorn took his place.
