Canadian hardcore veterans Comeback Kid have released “Shedding Season”, a new track featuring Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante. The collaboration arrives just ahead of the November 6 release of the band’s eighth studio album, “Chosen Hell”, and is accompanied by an official music video.
The song brings together Comeback Kid’s driving hardcore sound and LaPlante’s ferocious guest vocals. It is one of two collaborations featured on the upcoming record, alongside “Yesterday’s Gone”, which includes Brendan Garrone of Incendiary.
Frontman Andrew Neufeld recently explained that the collaboration developed from longstanding connections between the musicians. Spiritbox played an early show with Neufeld’s former band Sights & Sounds and Misery Signals, and the groups also shared a friendship with the late Bill Crook.
Neufeld said he initially dismissed the suggestion of a collaboration but eventually contacted LaPlante. She recorded her contribution while Spiritbox were in Toronto, and Neufeld praised her enthusiasm and down-to-earth attitude.
The result is a particularly heavy passage on “Chosen Hell”, with LaPlante delivering an aggressive performance that stands apart from some of the more melodic elements of her work with Spiritbox.
“Chosen Hell” will be released on November 6 through SharpTone Records and Dine Alone Records in Canada. The 11-track album was recorded with producer Will Putney at Graphic Nature Audio in New Jersey and follows Comeback Kid’s 2022 full-length “Heavy Steps”.
Neufeld has described the writing process as more collaborative than on previous releases, with the band members contributing ideas across the record. Earlier singles include the title track “Chosen Hell” and “Yesterday’s Gone”.
The group will also head out on a US tour this month, beginning with Flyover Fest in Oklahoma City on November 7. Defeater, The Warriors and Dead Heat are among the acts scheduled to appear on selected dates.
