Oklahoma City noise rock band Chat Pile have released “PEN I S MALL,” the second single from their upcoming third studio album, Who Loves the Sun, due out September 4 via The Flenser. The track follows lead single “Deep Blue.”
Bassist Stin called it the heaviest song the band has made to date. He said the title and lyrics stem from a period when vocalist Raygun Busch worked as a maintenance man at a shopping mall in Oklahoma City, and that Busch strained his voice badly while recording the track.
Vocalist Ray B. reflected on the song’s subject matter, suggesting that a maintenance job at a mall could be enjoyable work under different circumstances, but argued that economic hardship in the United States makes that kind of stability unrealistic for many workers.
“Who Loves the Sun” follows 2022’s “God’s Country” and 2024’s “Cool World”. Chat Pile will support the album with a Fall 2026 US tour featuring support from Soul Glo, Virga, and Shallow Water, kicking off September 12 in Oklahoma City.
