Following his departure from the band Midnight, Gavin Rossdale encountered former King Blank guitarist Nigel Pulsford during a Wembley performance by Baby Animals supporting Bryan Adams in November 1991. The two musicians developed a friendship based on mutual admiration for artists such as Big Black, The Fall, Pixies, and the Velvet Underground.

Together, they formed a new ensemble named Future Primitive. To complete the group, bassist Dave Parsons was recruited, and drummer Robin Goodridge joined in mid-1993, shortly before the band signed a record deal. While still operating under the name Future Primitive, the band released the track “Bomb” as a single through Rossdale’s independent label, Mad Dog Winston Records, which was later included on their debut album.

Rossdale aimed for Bush to secure a contract with 4AD, driven by his admiration for their bands Cocteau Twins, Pixies, and Throwing Muses.
