North Carolina’s psychedelic rockers Bask are back with their fourth studio album, “The Turning”, out August 22nd, 2025 via Season of Mist. With roots deep in Appalachian soil and eyes fixed firmly on the stars, the Asheville-based quartet are pushing their signature “Heavy Americana” sound into bolder, spacier territory—and they’ve brought a new band member along for the ride.
Their latest single, “Dig My Heels”, kicks things off with a familiar blend of gritty riffs and Southern groove, but it doesn’t stay earthbound for long. Thanks to new full-time member Jed Willis—who contributes pedal steel, keys, and chimes—the track drifts into cosmic terrain. His airy layers open up a psych-tinged dimension that deepens the band’s already expansive sound.
According to the band, the album was a long time coming. They endured more than a few setbacks, including COVID-19 and Hurricane Helene, but the end result is something they say feels like their most unified and heartfelt work to date. “The Turning” was recorded at Echo Mountain Recording in Asheville with local producer Kenny Harrington, who helped capture the raw and reflective tone of the album.
The band describes “Dig My Heels” as a turning point in the record’s narrative. It tells the story of an immortal gunslinger pursued through the stars, a wild ride that blends the mythic and the personal—touching on themes of family, aging, and rebirth. Musically, the track evolves from sunbaked Southern riffage into a spacious, psychedelic swirl, guided by drummer Scott Middleton’s proggier instincts and Willis’ dreamy steel work. It’s a soundscape that feels both grounded in the red clay of home and untethered by gravity.
Throughout “The Turning”, Bask lean even further into the musical contrasts they’ve always embraced. Drawing from their love of heavy music, folk, and bluegrass, they’ve created an eight-track, 40-minute journey that balances earthy storytelling with cosmic scale. The band credits their longtime friendship—and the addition of Willis—as key to crafting such a cohesive and mature release.
To celebrate the release, Bask will hit the road for a run of East Coast dates this August, where fans can hear “Dig My Heels” and other tracks from the new album live.
