Veteran extreme metal drummer Derek Roddy stepped in behind the kit for Anthrax during their October 2 performance supporting Iron Maiden at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City, as per Blabbermouth. Following the show, Roddy — whose extensive resume includes stints with Hate Eternal, Nile, Malevolent Creation, and Today Is The Day — shared a post on social media reflecting on the appearance.

While Anthrax have not officially disclosed the cause of permanent drummer Charlie Benante’s absence, the Mexico City concert marked his second missed date on the tour. Benante was also absent from the band’s September 29 slot opening for Iron Maiden at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, where former Fear Factory and current Raven drummer Mike Heller filled in with just hours of notice. Heller’s emergency gig came together that afternoon after receiving a call from Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren, allowing him to take the stage in front of tens of thousands of fans later that night.
Formed in New York City in 1981 by rhythm guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker, Anthrax stand as pioneering titans of American heavy metal. Regarded as key architects of the 1980s thrash metal movement, the group — alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer — comprises the genre’s legendary “Big Four,” while also serving as one of the earliest East Coast thrash acts to achieve global prominence next to Overkill and Nuclear Assault. Over a career marked by numerous lineup shifts, Ian has remained the sole constant member. The band’s current roster features Ian alongside long-time drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello, vocalist Joey Belladonna, and lead guitarist Jonathan Donais. Notably, Ian and Benante — who took over drumming duties from Greg D’Angelo in 1983 — are the only musicians to perform on every Anthrax studio release, while Bello has anchored the bass position since replacing Lilker in 1984.
