An eternal sound of steel – review of “Dead to Rights” by Metal Church

Author Dario De Marco - 2.4.2026

When a band has been around for over forty years, the biggest risk is becoming predictable. With “Dead to Rights”, Metal Church instead chooses the harder path: staying true to themselves without sounding tired! A band that forges ahead with a sound of steel.

The new album doesn’t beat around the bush: it starts strong and keeps getting stronger. No atmospheric intros, no modern compromises. Just tight riffs, solid structures, and an approach that looks squarely to the American heavy/thrash tradition. At the helm is Kurdt Vanderhoof, who once again keeps everything under control without overdoing it. His work here is surgical: every riff is where it needs to be, every structure works without needing to overdo it.

David Ellefson’s addition adds further weight to the rhythm section: the bass is present, solid, never ornamental. Rounding out the picture is Brian Allen, who delivers a powerful, raw, and direct vocal performance, perfectly aligned with the band’s spirit. Among the most successful moments are “Brainwash Game,” which immediately sets the tone for the album, and “Deep Cover Shakedown,” built on a solid, immediate groove. “F.A.F.O.” is probably the most direct track on the album: few frills, plenty of impact, like a direct and memorable slap! The impact is undoubtedly remarkable! “The Show,” on the other hand, introduces a more melodic nuance without ever losing tension.

Lyrically, “Dead to Rights “remains anchored in themes of disillusionment and social criticism. There’s no room for nostalgia: the message is clear, direct, and at times bitter. Just like the music. Overall, Metal Church aren’t reinventing anything, nor do they claim to, and they don’t even need to. This is an album designed for those seeking authentic, old-school heavy metal, played with experience and without shortcuts. An album and a band that still want to have their say—not to reinvent, but to endure!

“Dead to Rights” is a solid, direct, and uncompromising album. It won’t change the rules of the genre, but it proves that Metal Church still has a lot to say—and they do so in the most effective way possible!
